Post Description
Clocking in at around 100 minutes in length (including the bonus footage and hidden extras) this is an excellent re-cap of recent events post/prior the release of 3121.
Beginning with a 1 1/2 minute intro which includes a portion of the NAACP performance (the lettering on the back of his jacket is the key to the intro, as you'll see upon viewing) this sets up the compilation perfectly and is a good judge of the effort and time evidently gone into this release.
I hear '2KTV Volume 3' exists amongst a limited group of people which includes the broadcast footage on here, however it would have to be a killer release to even get close to this. Without going through each appearance one-by-one I'll give a brief overview.
Saturday Night Live, The Brit Awards, American Idol and Good Morning America are Widescreen, and both Saturday Night Live and American Idol are also in Dolby Digital Surround sound. The quality of each piece of broadcasted footage on here is beyond any criticism from me and with the exception of a few glitches during the BET broadcast I'd say these are as flawless as I've seen, and can find very little to fault throughout. The BET Awards footage appears to have a slight edit during the 3121 performance where a different source recording has been inserted for a small portion (presumably due to a problem with the better quality recording used for the remainder) but it is minimal, very professionally done and I'm really clutching at straws mentioning it. The volume level on American Idol is also marginally louder than any other footage on here, but that's it - those 2 comments are all I can honestly say affect this release.
Interestingly the release also includes audience filmed footage from the Good Morning America appearance. Filmed by 2 cameras either side of the stage and mixed together it gives a nice insight of the crowd's view and also (more interestingly) includes around 5 minutes not broadcast on TV. The unbroadcast footage mainly consists of Prince tuning his guitar in between songs while the show is off air, and 1 1/2 minutes of the soundcheck (a lazy version of 'Get On The Boat' performed behind large black screens) but for rarity value it is worthy of inclusion on here as bonus material. The camera work on the left cam is of extremely high quality and is unobstructed, sharp and very steady - unfortunately the same can't be said of the right hand camera footage which is often obstructed and not of the same high quality - thankfully the majority of the footage consists of the superior camera angle. The release also includes the 4 released promotional videos in support of the 3121 album which appear to have been taken from an in-house promo and are certainly not from a broadcast, with the exception of the withdrawn version of 'Fury' which was broadcast on German TV before being pulled immediately. As if all that funk wasn't enough there is also hidden footage which really is worth searching for on the DVD as it blows the broadcasted, heavily edited version out of the water.
The menu's throughout are plain, simple and very easy to navigate. Each clip has it's own sub-menu with song selection, etc and my only complaint regarding this is there is no "Play All" option where you can watch the DVD in it's entirety from start to finish without having to select the next broadcast. Overall though I'm overjoyed at this release and anything else which is currently exists must surely be obsolete unless it has something vastly different/better quality - and I cannot see that being the case.
