Het gebeurt maar zelden dat een natuurdocumentaire een bioscoophit wordt. We herinneren ons de snoezige Disney-films uit een ver verleden en, meer recent, het Franse Microcosmos (1996). Eveneens van Franse origine is March of the Penguins (La Marche de L'Empereur), dat alleen al in de VS 75 miljoen dollar opbracht. Voor een deel valt dat succes toe te schrijven aan de hoge aaibaarheidsfactor van pinguïns, voor een ander deel aan het verbazingwekkende paringsritueel waaraan deze Zuidpoolbewoners zich jaarlijks onderwerpen. Tegen de herfst trekken de pinguïns met duizenden tegelijk zo'n negentig kilometer landinwaarts, naar een min of meer beschut paargebied. Als de vrouwtjes hun ei hebben gelegd, nemen de mannetjes vervolgens de zorg op zich. Twee maanden lang houden ze de eieren warm, zonder water en voedsel, net zolang tot de vrouwtjes weer terugkeren met voedsel uit de zee voor de pasgeboren kleintjes. En dat alles natuurlijk onder extreem barre omstandigheden. Het is een indrukwekkend relaas van dapper doorstane ontberingen, dat niettemin de vraag oproept waarom moeder natuur haar onderdanen deze kwelling aandoet. In de VS hebben conservatieve en religieuze kringen inmiddels een antwoord paraat. Daar dient het verhaal van March of the Penguins als mogelijk bewijs van een 'intelligent design'; als een ritueel dus dat te wonderbaarlijk en complex is om niet door een hogere macht te zijn gecreëerd. Filmmaker Luc Jacquet, zelf bioloog, verzet zich tegen die uitleg. 'Dat intelligent design-idee zet de klok driehonderd jaar terug.' En de pinguïns zelf? Hen laat de hele discussie uiteraard volkomen koud.
