Muzz is het gloednieuwe project van Paul Banks. Moeten we Banks nog introduceren? Met Interpol was hij rechtstreeks verantwoordelijk voor de postpunk revival net na de eeuwwisseling. In het begin van deze eeuw bracht Interpol enkele legendarische albums uit, waarvan Turn on the Bright Lights het hoogtepunt was. Ook hun recentste langspeler Marauder kon ons wel bekoren en live stellen ze zelden teleur. Naast Banks zijn ook Josh Kaufman, die meewerkte aan Sleep Well Beast van The National en A Deeper Understanding van The War on Drugs, en Matt Berrick van The Walkmen en Fleet Foxes deel van Muzz. Met die achtergrond moet je nog geen noot van dit nieuwe project gehoord hebben om te weten dat het goed gaat zijn.
Muzz is zeker en vast geen kopie van Interpol. Het volle geluid van Interpol wordt ingeruild voor breekbare ingetogenheid. De indierock met kantjes altcountry liggen meer in lijn met Destroyer en zelfs The National. De instrumentatie en geluidskwaliteit van het album zijn geweldig. Dat hoorden we al op singles “Bad Feeling” en “Red Western Sky”. Qua songwriting is het helaas niet altijd even spannend. De twaalf nooit al te lange nummers zijn wisselvallig en schommelen tussen bloedstollend mooi en simpelweg beresaai.
“Bad Feeling” is een ijzersterke opener. Eerst horen we een prachtige, minimale gitaarmelodie en Banks’ met emoties doordrongen stem om verder te drijven tot een rijker geluid vol blazers en de engelenzang. Het is al meteen een eerste hoogtepunt vol kippenvel, dat helaas meteen ook abrupt eindigt. Wel wordt het meteen gevolgd door “Evergreen”, een nummer met een absurder kantje. “Red Western Sky” heeft iets weg van een Beirutnummer. “All is Dead to Me” is een episch nummer vol akoestische gitaren en – wederom – blazers.
“Broken Tambourine” is opnieuw een hoogtepunt geleid door een prachtige orgel en pianogetokkel met daarover de in bochten gewrongen zanglijnen van Banks, meanderende gitaren, zwoele drums en opnieuw die combinatie van blazers en engelenzang. De weemoed en eenzaamheid in Banks’ stem is bijzonder groot. Grootsheid vinden we dan weer terug in “Knuckleduster”, een nummer waarbij de distortionpedalen wel worden opengedraaid. Ook de gitaarsolo in “How Many Days” klinkt bijzonder goed en to the point.
Naast geweldige nummers zijn er ook wat mindere momenten: de repetitieve electronica van “Chubby Checker” leidt nergens heen, “Everything Like it Used to Be” en afsluiter “Trinidad” zijn niet bijzonder memorabel. Algemeen gezien voelt Muzz’ debuut niet enorm origineel aan. Dat zou niet mogen uitmaken, zolang het maar weloverwogen, spannende nummers zijn. De drie heren maken vast en zeker prachtige songs samen, helaas is dat spannende aspect vaak niet helemaal aanwezig. Nummers als “Patchouli” missen duidelijk een richting en dobberen dan maar wat rond in de rest van het album.
Hoewel er geweldige dingen de revue zijn gepasseerd, voelt het album toch een beetje onvolledig. Dat komt voornamelijk door de algemene wisselvalligheid en doordat de songs niet altijd even goed uitgewerkt zijn. Wij zouden een Muzz verkiezen waarop nummers als “Bad Feeling” tijd en ruimte krijgen om zichzelf te ontvouwen. Dat er daardoor twee of drie nummers op het album zouden staan, zou ons helemaal niets uitmaken. Hoe geweldig het ook is Paul Banks in een ander daglicht te horen, toch blijven we een beetje op onze honger zitten. Gelukkig staan er nog genoeg wel geweldige nummers op dit debuut om van te genieten.
