De bandleden introduceren in Nederland de nieuwe, gewaagde langhaarmode. Al in de vroege jaren werken zij met een lichtshow. Gitarist Jan de Hont maakt als eerste Nederlandse gitarist gebruik van feedback (op plaat te horen in Three's A Crowd). In juni 1965 tijdens een van de tournees door Engeland ziet de band een optreden van The Who in The Marquee. Onder de indruk van de muziek en het imago laten zij de broer van de organist, kapper Kees Otting, overkomen. Nog tijdens de tournee krijgen de bandleden een kort modkapsel, dit tot teleurstelling en verwarring van de honderden trouwe fans die de band op Schiphol welkom heten. Immers heeft Bouber zich in de publiciteit herhaaldelijk opgeworpen als beschermheer van de langharige jeugd. 1965 is het topjaar voor De Maskers. In het begin van het jaar hebben zij hun grootste hit met Ik Heb Genoeg Van Jou. Verder nemen zij twee singles op met twistkoning Chubby Checker (Slopping In Las Vegas en Baby Baby Balla Balla). De eerste langspeler van ZZ en de Maskers krijgt een Edison. Op het persoonlijke vlak botert het echter niet tussen de wat oudere Bob Bouber (geboren op 6 september 1935) en de rest van de band. De act van De Maskers alleen komt steeds losser te staan van de optredens als begeleiders van ZZ. In de loop van het jaar verlaat Bouber de groep en werpt hij zich op een nieuw project: Het.
