Toch twijfelt niemand eraan dat Apocalyptica tot de groep van echte muzikale vernieuwers behoort. De mix tussen rock en klassiek bestond al eerder, maar het idee om een leger cello’s als elektrische gitaren te misbruiken was nagelnieuw. En daarmee streek de groep al snel een plaatsje op tussen een pak grote metalnamen. Maar ook verjonging went en wordt oud … De nieuwste Apocalyptica heet toepasselijk ‘7th Symphony’ en moet de hedendaagse sound van de groep bij een ruim publiek hoorbaar maken. Daarvoor smeert het kwartet lustig met eyeliner maar daar blijft het helaas niet bij. Muzikaal doet Apocalyptica denken aan Stonesour met een vleugje Nickelback erbij. Te hard voor rock en te licht voor metal dus, maar ook zonder boeiende structuren of gewaagde keuzes. End Of Me is typisch zo’n nummer dat in je hoofd blijft hangen zonder een blijvende indruk achter te laten en daarna volgt met Not Strong Enough een song van een identiek kaliber. Flauwe zanglijnen, een eenvoudig riffje en een opzwepend ritme, meer niet. Maar waar een conventionele band instrumentale nummertjes als vulling gebruikt krijg je van Apocalyptica iets heel anders te horen. De zeven minuten durende opener At The Gates Of Manala krijgt je meteen in de sfeer, Through Paris In A Sportscar trakteert je op een stevige en hevige mix van klassieke cellomuziek met een vette en ruige ondertoon waarna je met Beautiful even een ingetogen en romantisch stukje muziek krijgt voorgeschoteld. Dit is de sterkte van deze groep en hun instrumentenkeuze. Cello’s klinken namelijk niet zo strak en schel als gitaren, waardoor je een heel erg warm en wollig klankenpallet krijgt, ook als er een overdosis distortion op losgelaten is. Het nadeel is echter wel dat dit erg subtiel speelt en dat er in de nu-metaluitspattingen niet veel van die sound overeind blijft. Zoals zoveel groepen slaat deze uniekeling de bal dus half mis, maar de sterke stukken zijn in dit geval ongetwijfeld de moeite waard om deze plaat eens door de speakers te laten knallen. Apocalyptica is en blijft een buitenbeentje en mag daar trots op zijn. Die hele reeks gastoptredens mag gerust geschrapt worden als we dan terug de pure en instrumentale groep terugkrijgen, want dat is wat indruk maakt. Dat is echte kunst, geen zoveelste symfonietje. Ken je de band niet, neem de cd mee en overtuig jezelf van de kunst van muziek
