Cold Creature De recentie van hifi.nl : Deze singer / songwriter heb ik leren kennen door de LP ‘Water Falls’ van Sara K. waarop hij K. op gitaar ondersteunt. Dat gebeurt op dusdanig indrukwekkende wijze dat ik wel erg benieuwd raak naar zijn solowerk. ‘Roadhouses & Automobiles’stamt uit 2003 en is niet het eerste solo album dat hij voor Stockfisch opneemt. Chris JonesHet heeft veel overeenkomsten met andere schijven van dit Duitse kwaliteitslabel. Zo komen er bij de begeleiders namen terug die ik op iedere CD tegenkom; multi instrumentalist Beo Brockhausen, bassisten Grischka Zepf en – de tevens voor de mastering verantwoordelijke - Hans-Jörg Maucksch en zangeres Christina Lux bijvoorbeeld. Ook de geluidskwaliteit is als vanouds; de krachtige, directe, gedetailleerde en heldere huissound van Stockfisch. Net als op de andere releases zijn ook hier de teksten weer veelzeggend en ligt ook het instrumentale niveau hoog. Vergelijk ik de werken van Chris Jones met andere folk sterren van het label – zoals David Munyon en Allan Taylor – dan valt ook een verschil op; er zit meer variatie in de nummers, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal. Dat komt met name tot uitdrukking in een ritmisch nummer als ‘Hoof Jelly’ – met een heerlijk klinkende tuba - waarop ik niet stil kan blijven zitten. In tegenstelling tot de eerder genoemde zangers is er bij Chris dan ook een grotere country invloed te bespeuren. In het titelnummer klinkt door dat het niet altijd even eenvoudig is om een relatie te bestendigen wanneer je, zoals Chris Jones, per jaar tussen de 150 en 200 dagen onderweg bent. In ‘Thank You (R.J. Reynolds)’ beschrijft Chris zijn reeds dertig jaar durende gevecht met de nicotine. Een gevecht dat nog niet ten einde is. ‘Darlin’Cory’ is een heerlijk up tempo nummer met een prachtig gevangen fiddle, bespeeld door Sjard de Jong. Op ‘The Last Fallen Oak’ is slechts één gitaar te horen, maar hij klinkt heerlijk. ‘No Sanctuary Here’ gaat over het verschil tussen arm en rijk dat steeds schrijnender wordt; at some point something’s got to give…. De prachtig opgenomen sonore mannenstemmen brengen de dreiging indringend over. ‘Fender Bender’ is opnieuw instrumentaal en ditmaal wordt de gitaar van Chris aangevuld door de eveneens door hem bespeelde dobro, de bas van Grischka Zepf, pedal steel van Nils Tuxen, hammond b3 van Thomas Klippel en drums van Christian Archontidis. ‘God Moves On The Water’ en ‘Set ‘Em Up, Joe’ zijn heerlijk ritmisch en worden, wanneer eenmaal gehoord, niet makkelijk meer losgelaten. ‘Jolanda’s Wedding March’ laat opnieuw die ene gitaar horen en is gecomponeerd naar aanleiding van de mededeling van Hollandse vrienden van Chris – Noel en Jolanda – dat ze gaan trouwen. Zo simpel is het soms om op de titel van een nummer te komen. Gelukkig neemt Chris in het een na laatste nummer ‘Don’t Need Your Religion’ ( de wereld heeft genoeg fanatici, religies etc. ) zijn dobro weer ter hand; een prachtig instrument. Zo ook in het laatste nummer ‘Cold Creature’ waarin opnieuw een stukgelopen relatie – altijd een dankbaar onderwerp voor een tekstschrijver – centraal staat.
